Today was absolutely my favorite kind of day. We did see Orcas… this story though isn’t about Orcas but the beauty of humanity. We got off the boat an hour a half drive from where we boarded because the water was too rough. We were wet, freezing and tossed..Seeing us from their window, this couple invited us into their home. Within minutes hot coffee and cinnamon rolls were on the table and we had small conversation before our rescue ride arrived. Recently I was asked about hospitality and hosting. This couple was the picture of that. Their house was under construction and we were not the ideal guests (five soaking wet people in wet suits) but we were in need so there was no hesitation.
When I asked how the cinnamon rolls were made so quickly, I was told she always has them on hand. In that spirit I’m going to do the same.. Cinnamon rolls, cookies.. Something. So my house is ready to welcome an unexpected guest who shows up to be hosted at an imperfect time. We worry what people will think of our imperefect spaces. In this case it led to the feeling of an even more beautiful and sacrificial welcome.
